Lizbeth Metallic Threads for Oya Review

Handy Hands has released a set of metallic threads in various sizes! I decided to pick some up to do a review of the different sizes so here we go!

ree

Pros:

The comparable size 10 and 20 threads are nice and soft. They knot pretty well, but you might have to use your thumb and index finger to push the head of the knots down to make them more snug and uniform. This is especially true of their size 40 metallic thread.

If you are doing patterns with large fringes, the material actually provides more structure! E.g. Butterflies pattern.

Cons:

You have to be a bit more careful when you thread metallic thread through the eye of the needle. Unlike mercerized cotton Lizbeth threads, the strands do split apart more and will do so if you do not have the right needle size. If you have a tool to pull the thread through the eye of the needle, I highly recommend using a threader.

If you are using the comparable size 40 metallic threads, it is extremely difficult to take out a knot. I would work a lot more carefully if I were to use this size. I would also just start over if I messed up a large fringe pattern.

The size 10/20 threads are easier to take the knots out of. The threads will kink more than cotton thread, so it is best to work with this if you are very focused.

--------------------------------------------

The first thing I noticed about the Metallic 20 thread size is that it is actually thicker than the size 10 Metallic Thread. The thread thickness looks pretty similar until I used it with a pattern. I think what they label as size 10 is ideal for edging work.

The Lace Museum has invited me to teach virtual classes for Turkish Oya again so please check their site out. There are a lot of other neat classes and a Night and Day Lace Marathon event coming up in June!

My next class will be four weeks on Wednesdays, June 4, 11, 18, 25.

This class will be done on square templates provided by the Lace Museum on these patterns.

I recently taught a five week class in April going over various lace edgings. Carol sent me a bunch of her beautiful work from class.
